Huizhou Monochromatic: A Ricoh GR II Street Photography Story
The last day of November brought a heavy, overcast sky to Huizhou, ideal for the high-contrast black and white aesthetic of the Ricoh GR II.
Wandering the city, the High Contrast Black & White mode emphasized texture, geometry, and shadow, making the familiar cinematic. We focused on juxtapositions: a delicate paper flower against a stark background, and a lone car by wrecked buildings—a silent testament to urban decay.
Moments of repose were found in a cafe garden with blurred conversation, contrasting with the simple geometries inside, like a kitchen and a potted grape plant.
The streets offered quiet vignettes: a vase of flowers inside, an empty bench outside, and two girls taking a selfie contrasted by enduring structures. The bizarre sight of a bicycle hanging from a building captured the effort of urban life. Bicycles, in fact, became a recurring motif, a silent rhythm of the city's narrative.
We stumbled upon eccentricities: a whimsical teapot painting, a serene Koi pond reflection, and a restaurant painting mirroring a dinner table. Small enclosed spaces offered cultural clues, like a window with Chinese writing or a cozy interior with a bookshelf.
The architecture was rendered abstractly, emphasizing structural forms. The cloudy day concluded with a strange detail: a stone with a painted pig face. Every stark image contributed to a gritty, beautiful portrait of Huizhou in deep contrast.
