Yunfu Taoyuan Restaurant: A Flavorful Road Trip Stop
The long drive from Liuzhou to Dongguan necessitated a pleasant and timely stop in the city of Yunfu as late afternoon turned into evening.
Yunfu's downtown was alive with the steady rhythm of daily life. Traffic lights expertly managed the flow of scooters and cars. The streets showcased a mix of old and new, notably an older building with a yellow sign advertising the "Songxian Medicine Store" in both Chinese and English. Sidewalks were lined with parked scooters and motorcycles, including one with a "Yun Fu" license plate in Chinese. A passing white car suggested locals were likely heading out for their evening meal.
For dinner, we visited the well-known Taoyuan Restaurant, identifiable by its name clearly displayed in Chinese on an outdoor sign. Inside, the rustic charm was immediate, featuring a wall decorated with a fan and poster, and a blackboard menu announcing the "Taoyuan Restaurant Menu" in Chinese.
The meal itself was a highlight. We savored two distinct local specialties: Hakka stuffed three treasures and stir-fried pork liver with green pepper. Our drinks were served with traditional flair: a white cup with a blue dragon design, a white teapot marked with "Hong Li" in red Chinese writing, and a cup featuring "Da Long Yi" in both Chinese and English. A close-up of the expertly prepared Hakka stuffed three treasures captured the essence of the local cuisine. We also enjoyed a teapot with a red sign advertising "Red Rice Wine" in Chinese.
After the satisfying dinner, a final local touch was observed: a sign with "coffee addict" written in Chinese—perhaps a humorous acknowledgment of the energy needed for the remainder of the journey. Before getting back on the road, a quick, refreshing dessert of grass jelly and taro balls provided the perfect finish. Nearby, a tank with a group of small, colorful fish added another small detail.
Refreshed and nourished, our brief but flavorful stop in Yunfu served as ideal preparation for the rest of the journey to Dongguan.
