Pagodas to Platter: Long Drive to Lancang and a Yunnan Feast
We kicked off the day in Mangshi with a big breakfast and a quick tour of the awesome Menghuan Grand Golden Pagoda. Then, we hit the road for the long but worthwhile afternoon drive to Lancang, where we'd crash for the night. It was a beautiful, clear-sky drive, and we kept thinking about that stunning pagoda surrounded by palm trees and Chinese architecture.
We finally rolled into the city area of Lancang around 5:00 pm. After checking into the hotel, the light was fading fast, so we immediately headed out to find some dinner, maneuvering through streets packed with cars and motorcycles. The busy, concrete city skyline was pretty standard, except for a single, tall electricity tower in the distance.
We found a cool, cozy spot for dinner. Settling into the comfy chairs, we really appreciated the simple, solid hardwood look of the place. The stress from the drive totally disappeared as the food started coming. Our table was soon loaded with a huge feast of steaming dishes—lots of great meat, vibrant veggies, and all sorts of food. The amazing smells filled the air. We raised a glass to celebrate a successful trip segment and the promise of a great night's sleep before the next leg of driving. It was a perfect, satisfying end to the day, wrapped up in modern, local comfort.
