Breakfast in Mangshi: The Taste of Yunnan

Introduction

We packed gear in crisp Tengchong air for the two-hour drive to Mangshi and the promise of a Yunnan breakfast.

We arrived at the bustling Yindian Breakfast Restaurant, a typical Mangshi building with a distinct roof.

Grabbing a table, we focused on the rice noodles. The waiter brought the laminated menu. We watched the staff cooking: one expertly handling the rice noodles, another frying deep fried eggs.

Our massive, fragrant bowls arrived. One was a hearty rice noodle with meatballs, beef ribs, fried egg, and mint. The other was simpler: rice noodle with meatballs, green onions, and mint. We added sides of boiled beef meatballs and crispy deep fried dough sticks.

As we finished, we observed the methodical preparation of fresh rice noodles. The experience captured the Mangshi morning spirit. We finished with a golden banana pancake before leaving.
