A Night in Nanning: BBQ, Beer, and the Road Home
The lengthy but scenic drive from Yunnan concluded with a much-needed stop in Nanning, Guangxi, on the return journey toward Guangdong. We arrived as the city was lighting up, and our hunger spurred us to seek out local cuisine.
We quickly located a lively BBQ spot. The restaurant was immediately recognizable by its inviting red light and a sign showcasing local specialties. Inside, bright, practical white lighting illuminated the smoky, bustling space. Our first order was a celebratory one: an ice-cold can of beer to mark the end of the day's travel, soon joined by another on the table.
The meal was served promptly—a vibrant and flavorful spread. It included a basket of meat chops ready for the grill, alongside an unexpected but decadent dish: a pizza generously topped with bacon. Smaller accompaniments, such as a bowl of food and a plate of meat and vegetables, rounded out the feast.
As we ate, we observed the local scene. Two men at a nearby table were engrossed in a silent game of Chinese chess, while others, like two women, simply enjoyed their evening meal.
Leaving the restaurant, the night was still active. We took in the busy street scene, noting a man standing in the middle of the street, before heading back to the hotel. Our stop in Nanning, highlighted by a satisfying dinner and captured in the final glimpse of a blue and white sign on a scooter, proved to be the perfect intermission.
