Heshun: Tracing History and Serenity in an Ancient Town
The sun hung high over Heshun Ancient Town, casting sharp shadows beneath the main archway. I was tracing the final steps of my journey, pausing by the intricate Heshun library plaque and the less ostentatious, yet equally meaningful, plaque Xian Xin She. The weight of history felt palpable, sealed in plaques like the one by Zhu Rongji and the revered plaque - Wen Chang Gong.
A gentle breeze carried the scent of wet stone and rice. I crossed the weathered bridge, leaving the tightly packed houses behind for the open air. Ahead, the brilliant green of the rice field stretched out. I watched as a girl walking along the rice field moved with practiced ease, a figure of grace against the fertile landscape. In the distance, near the same green expanse, a dedicated photographer in the rice field was already at work, attempting to capture the very essence that would culminate in a full view of Heshun Ancient Town.
I spotted the women again, their movements rhythmic and familiar as they were washing in the river, a timeless scene of local life. I walked back toward the heart of the town, past the dignified archway - Bing Qing Yu Jie (as pure as jade), a structure that felt both welcoming and proud. My final stop was the pavilion, its roof a textured blend of tile and living roof with grass. Looking out over the water, the town’s simple treasures—the folded hand fans and the perfectly circular oil-paper umbrella I'd seen earlier—seemed to summarize the day: a blend of quiet tradition and enduring beauty. The afternoon sun gilded the scene, bringing my peaceful exploration of Heshun to a close.
