A Taste of Tengchong: Authentic Cuisine at Yan Tengchong

Introduction

After a three-hour walk in Heshun Ancient Town, we dined at Yan Tengchong Restaurant, a local establishment serving authentic cuisine. The comfortable atmosphere featured traditional decor and rustic restaurant serveware, accented by a mini houseplant. We began with a cup of tea and bottles of tea, followed by home made alcoholic drinks.

The extensive local feast started with an unexpected sashimi set of local freshwater fish and a local wild vegetable. We sampled various mushroom dishes: mushroom sashimi, deep fried mushrooms, and simple mushrooms, alongside intensely flavored spice mushrooms and spicy mushrooms. For the brave, there were crispy local insects, including deep fried worms, local deep fried worms, and fried worms.

Meat dishes featured tender local beef slices, local beef slices with vegetables, and fiery spicy beef cubes. Seafood included light fried shrimp and spicy fish garnished with lime slices, as well as plain fish. The meal concluded with steamed rice with beans and mushrooms and savory local sausage, with one spectacular dish on fire. The dinner was a rich and restorative culinary journey through Tengchong's unique flavors, perfectly ending our walk.
