A Dongguan Farewell: New Year's Eve with the GR II
The final day of 2025 in Dongguan unfolded as a blend of calm observation and vibrant festivity, the cool downtown air thick with the scent of street food and palpable anticipation.
The morning was marked by quiet moments: a reflective window view featured simple end-of-year tokens—a red table with a star, a dog ornament, and a gift box. Inside a café, the day's indulgences began with water, followed by a warm "HAVE A NICE MEAL" wish accompanying a plate, and a refreshing iced Americano. Lunch offered a satisfying comfort in the form of fried chicken wings and fries.
The city's rhythm accelerated in the afternoon with a car show that drew crowds to admire polished vehicles. Automotive history and design were showcased, including a top view of sleek vintage sport cars, a vibrant pink standout, and a classic red car in a showroom.
As dusk fell, the downtown area transformed into a spectacular holiday scene. People hurried past the "SUSHIRO" sign toward their evening activities. A giant, brightly lit Christmas tree, bearing a "Winter Tale 2026" sign, dominated the night, accompanied by a magically glowing carousel whose horses were in mid-spin. These festive installations, especially the tree and the carousel's colorful ceiling, were popular spots for capturing memories.
The evening included a brief entertainment break—two tickets for "Avatar: Fire and Ash"—and a final culinary celebration. This grand finale featured a light bowl of ice jelly followed by a hearty dinner of roasted fish seasoned with green peppers and Sichuan peppercorns.
The year concluded on a silent, contemplative note: a can of used fireworks resting on a cement block, the quiet aftermath signifying a year well-spent and the final signal before the dawn of 2026.
